- This is such a lovely painting in the style of similar to the well known Wirral artist George Thompson.
- Subject an impressionist view of Chester Eastgate Street Clock and has such an intriguing quality and colourful happy scene that is very attractive.
- Eastgate and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix.
- It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
- The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century.
- The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls.
- In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier.
- It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola.
- The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas.
- The whole structure, gateway and clock, was designated as a Grade I listed building on 28 July 1955.
- George Thompson was born in Wigan in 1934, but moved to Chester at the age of eleven.
- He studied Fine Art (painting) at Chester School of Art and gained his ATD (Art Teacher's Diploma), the equivalent of a degree in art which you could not obtain at university at that time.
- He has been teaching since then in Chester and The Wirral.
- He lives in West Kirby on the Wirral Peninsula and every summer has a working holiday abroad painting. He has visited Venice, Tuscany, Croatia, Corfu and Ireland.
- He has had 1 man exhibitions in Australia, Canada, USA and Japan, as well as the UK and his paintings are in collections worldwide.
- He has won prizes at the Pastel Society Exhibition, the Mall Galleries in London and the National Scrylic Painters' Association Exhibition.
- Well composed with extreme accuracy in its execution with beautifully controlled brush work.
- Set in a rather nice wooden frame.

- Offered in fine used condition.
- Frame has some scuffs, chips wear marks in places commensurate with usage & age.
- Painting front surface has some minor foxing stains with usage & age, with further noticeable foxing on the back.
