- Edward Henry Windred's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging UP to 7,821 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 2008 the record price for this artist at auction is 7,821 USD for Portrait of six racing pigeons, the property of W. Hurley Jnr, sold at Woolley & Wallis in 2020.
- Windred was a Barber by trade, but he was also a "Pigeon Fancier" and raced his own pigeons. He also had a passion for painting, like had his father had before him and as a "Sunday Painter" he gradually established a sideline in painting images of victorious and champion birds for their proud owners whilst travelling around the racing pigeon meetings. Windred is reputed to have had a handful of stencils that depicted a range of generic pigeon profiles/silhouettes, the outlines of which he drew onto canvases which he had pre-painted with naive stylised landscapes.
- He then carefully and accurately added the individual bird's markings and thus created his individual and idiosyncratic style depicting flat, two dimensional painted depictions of the birds with impeccably observed details of their unique markings. Windred is an iconic British Folk Artist and considered significant for his body of work. Indeed most Folk Art collections include works by E H Windred and it was represented at Tate Britain in their British Folk Art Exhibition in 2014.
