Ben Maile is a 20th-century British painter best known for his realistic depictions of landscapes, marine scenes, and historical military events. Characterized by an atmospheric sense of light, Maile’s paintings incorporates both heavy lines and misty areas of tonal color to produce an effect of realism suspended in a dream-like state.
Born in 1922 in Northamptonshire, United Kingdom, Maile’s works are in the collections of the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth, the Cheshire Military Museum in Chester, and the British Postal Museum and Archive in London, among others.
The artist lives and works in Ireland.A favorite of the British Royal family, artist Ben Maile established a long-running career creating vivid coastal, military, and urban scenes. His first noteworthy showing was in 1959, at the age of 37, after which he was frequently commissioned for oil paintings and illustrations. Maile typically incorporated impasto, a sculpture-like effect achieved through thick strokes, that further enhanced his evocative depictions.
Ben Maile also produced colorful portraits of everyday life. Maile often found his muse in scenes of early England, and detailed works such as The Eastgate Clock and Lombard Street Post Office are excellent examples.
