- Francis Calcraft Turner 1782-1846 was a prolific artist, though surprisingly little is known of his early life. The majority of his hunting scenes show hunts from the south of England, including the Essex Hounds, the East Kent, and the Old Barkeley. He was a regular contributor to The Sporting Magazine, providing no less than 78 works. In a letter to the editor in 1828 he claimed I have rode to more hounds and have been in at the death of more foxes than any artist in existence - nay more, my knowledge of racing, shooting, coursing, etc. is alike.
- A member of the Society of British Artists, he exhibited in London between 1810 and 1846, showing 11 compositions at the Royal Academy, 23 at the British Institution and 36 at the Suffolk Street Gallery.he is recorded as living in London and it is widely believed he was born there. He was a talented artist and draughtsman who specialised in sporting paintings as well as dog portraits. He spent his time following sporting events and the local hunts including the Essex Hounds, East Kent and the Old Berkeley and earned commissions to paint favourite horses or dogs.
- He is likely to be related to the artist GA Turner who was probably his son, as they shared two of the same addresses: 66 Great Queen Street, Lincolns Inn fields and 94 York Road, Waterloo Bridge, from where they both exhibited. During the early 1830’s, Turner suffered from financial difficulties but continued producing paintings and exhibiting works at the Royal Academy. He died at Lambeth, London in 1846.
